The local authority caterers (LACA)

LACA welcomes the launch of the report by the School Meals Review Panel which contains its recommendations for the introduction of new nutritional standards for school meals.

LACA understands that the new nutritional standards entitled “Turning the tables - transforming school food” are divided into two sections. The first section - food standards - is based on nine general areas of food and drink requirements. The second section -nutrient standards - is comprised of fourteen nutrient standards based on revised Caroline Walker Trust Guidelines. The first part of the new nutritional standards must be fully in force in both primary and secondary schools by September 2006. With the introduction of the nutrient standards recognised as being more complex to implement, Local Education Authorities (LEA’s) and school caterers have been given a longer time frame with which to comply with these, i.e. by no later than 2008 for primary schools and by no later than 2009 for secondary schools.
