Nutrition for nurses

Nurses can boost their knowledge of the latest news in diet and nutrition with a new magazine, launched this month. Nutrition for Nurses, produced with backing from the British Meat Nutrition Education Service (BMNES), will help practice nurses offer their patients practical dietary advice, and will provide educational information and reports on the latest nutrition and lifestyle research.

Nicola Wilde, BMNES Product Manager Health and Education, explains: With around two-thirds of the population now overweight or obese, the publication of Nutrition for Nurses is a timely reminder of the crucial role practice nurses play in helping patients manage their weight.

"Nurses represent the first port of call for many people wanting to make dietary improvements and are in an ideal position to help patients make lifestyle changes. As the government signals its intention to fight obesity through a range of initiatives, we wanted to support these efforts through publication of our own resources for healthcare professionals. We felt there was a gap in the market in accessible health and diet information written specifically for practice nurses.

Nutrition for Nurses is easy to read and features a range of articles on healthy eating, exercise and food disorders. The first issue focuses on childhood obesity, the government's healthy lunchbox programme and the role of red meat in fighting anaemia, as well as dispelling myths about the Atkins Diet.

The magazine will be published twice a year. The first edition is being distributedÂ’with Practice Nurse magazine, and is free of charge. For a free copy, e-mail:Â’bmnes@grhealthcare.co.uk or download a copy from the web site: www.meatandhealth.com.
