For students of nutrition and health this could prove a most useful book. It is divided into three parts with a number of chapters in each part.

  1. 1.

Part one is the study of nutrition and contains three chapters:

  • What is nutrition?

  • What are the influences on eating habits?

  • Basics of a healthy diet.

  1. 1.

Part two is the nutrients in food and their role in health. The chapters are:

  • Proteins

  • Fats

  • Carbohydrates

  • Energy needs

  • Energy balance

  • Vitamins

  • Minerals, electrolytes and fluid

  1. 1.

Part three is the application of nutrition knowledge and covers chapters:

  • Pregnancy and lactation

  • Infants, children and adolescents

  • Adults and the elderly populations

  • Diet and coronary heart disease

  • Diet and cancer

  • Challenges to nutritional solutions

  • Optimising nutrition

  • Public health nutrition and health promotion

Each chapter begins with concise aims of what the student should be able to do after studying the chapter.

Throughout each chapter there are helpful tables. There are also activities for the reader to perform. The figures are helpful and drawn in such a way as to be eye‐catching. Some of the interpretations of nutritional information into the practical situation are particularly helpful. For example, the menu to show how to implement the balance of good health would be extremely useful to anyone involved in catering.

Each chapter concludes with a summary of the key points covered plus study questions, there is also a helpful list of references.

Overall an excellent book on nutrition and useful for the bookcase of anyone with an interest in nutrition.
