Environmental effects of bottled water

A recent report highlights the environmental impact of importing bottled water to the UK from as far afield as Canada and assesses the fuel emissions generated by transportation. The report, commissioned by Brita Water Filters, estimated that just one tonne of bottled water travelling one kilometre by road generates 2.4 grams of carbon monoxide, 3.6 grams of nitrogen oxide and 0.3 grams of hydrocarbons, three of the most serious pollutants in fuel emissions. Some 624,808 tonnes of bottled water were imported into the UK last year, travelling many thousands of kilometres in the process. Over half the imports came from France but last year the UK imported 48,661 tonnes of mineral water from Canada, a journey of over 3,000 miles.
