Better NHS food

Better NHS food

A recent survey has shown that too many patients are dissatisfied with the food they receive in hospital and over £45 million is wasted annually on food not eaten. Nearly £40 million will be spent over the next four years to improve the quality and availability of hospital food for patients. Loyd Grossman has selected and will co-ordinate a panel of leading chefs to design a new NHS menu in consultation with nursing, dietitians, catering professionals and patients' representatives. By 2001 a 24-hour ward call service will provide patients with meals at anytime of the day or night with the new NHS menu. This service will be available in all NHS hospitals. Patients will be consulted regularly on the quality of food they receive and there will be unannounced inspections of the quality of hospital food. Dietitians will advise and check the nutritional values of hospital food.
