Coeliac disease
Coeliac disease
Dr Geoffrey Holmes, speaking at a recent Coeliac Conference, reported a link between untreated coeliac disease and infertility and unfavourable outcomes in pregnancy. If left untreated coeliac disease is associated with reproductive problems such as early menopause, miscarriage and infertility. The problems are alleviated once a gluten-free diet is established. Results from research showed that after screening using an endomysial antibody test and small intestinal biopsy, one in 70 patients tested positive for coeliac disease. The UK Coeliac Society provides support and information for people medically diagnosed with coeliac disease including a regularly updated list of foods and manufactured gluten-free products. Their address is PO Box 220, High Wycombe, Bucks HP11 2HY. Tel: 01494 437278. There is also a Web site: www.coeliac.co.uk
