More drugs counsellors to be recruited

The Government took a positive step to combat drug misuse in advertising for a further 300 extra drugs counsellors. This is part of its ten year anti-drugs strategy which aims to help people to overcome their drugs problems and live healthy, crime free lives. Drugs dependence is a chronic, relapsing condition and patients need professional support and counselling to prevent them relapsing into drugs misuse once more. Health Authorities have been allocated an extra £250 million for a three year campaign for anti-drugs activity. This is in addition to the £53 million allocated to health authorities to support existing drugs prevention schemes. The Department of Health is also advertising to boost young people's awareness of the National Drugs Helpline. This offers 24-hour confidential help, information and support to anyone concerned about drug and solvent abuse directing them to local specialist drug agencies of appropriate. The helpline takes over 400,000 calls a year and the number to call is: 0800 77 66 00.
