Carers' needs

There are about six million carers in the UK. One in eight adults give informal care and one in six homes have a carer. Carers play a vital role in helping friends and relatives and without their support many people would lose the chance to stay in their own homes or with their own families. Caring can be a difficult task often undertaken at great personal cost. They need practical help and support and proper respite from the task of helping those they care for. The Health Minister Paul Boateng is looking for ideas, views and examples of good local practice to feed directly into the work being done on the first ever National Carers Strategy. There are nearly 70 Princess Royal Trust Carers Centres across the UK. Each centre provides information, support and practical help for those caring for relatives, friends or neighbours who otherwise may be unable to manage at home.
