This special issue comprises selected papers from the QUIS-11 Symposium that was held in June 2009 in Wolfsburg, Germany. It proved to be not only an opportunity to enjoy German hospitality and a visit to Volks Wagen but, more importantly, to experience the sophisticated and meticulous attention demonstrated in the services provided by Bernd Stauss, Klaus Chojnacki and the Ingolstadt School of Management students. This was by far one of the best symposiums/conferences I have ever attended.

It was during this very enjoyable and productive time in Wolfsburg that we learned that Professor Bernd Stauss will be stepping down from his position as the Chair in Services Management at the Ingolstad School of Management to take up retirement. Dr Stauss was the first Chair in Services Management in Germany and has been very active in the historical development of the services management and marketing discipline. Dr Stauss is not only an eminent scholar in the services field but is, more importantly, a very special friend who has served as a role model for me and for many others like me. While we accept Dr Stauss’ decision to step back from the academic field, his active presence in our discipline will be sorely missed. For me, personally, Dr Stauss’ retirement from academia is much more than one man leaving the chair.

I hope you will join me in dedicating this special issue of selected papers from QUIS-11 to honor Professor Bernd Stauss for his substantial contribution to the services management discipline.
