Wilocity tapes-out multi-gigabit wireless communication SoC using Synopsys DesignWare IP
Article Type: New products From: Microelectronics International, Volume 28, Issue 3
Synopsys, Inc. have announced that Wilocity has successfully taped out its multi-gigabit Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig)-compliant system-on-chip (SoC) utilising Synopsys’ broad portfolio of high-quality DesignWare(r) IP and assistance from Synopsys Professional Services. The DesignWare IP used in the SoC included PCI Express, embedded memories and logic libraries. Wilocity’s SoC is based on the WiGig and IEEE802.11ad draft specifications, enabling multi-gigabit wireless for a wide range of applications, from I/O to networking to video.
By leveraging the breadth of Synopsys’ tools, DesignWare IP solutions and expertise from Synopsys Professional Services, Wilocity was able to reduce power consumption in some of the more complex arithmetic clusters by approximately 50 percent, increase performance by 65 percent and improve utilisation by up to 70 percent compared to their previous design executed with a competitive solution.
Working in close cooperation, Wilocity and Synopsys designers made significant improvements in the architecture, partitioning and algorithm design. During the implementation phase, Wilocity leveraged tools from Synopsys’ Galaxy(tm) Implementation Platform and the physical design experience of Synopsys Professional Services consultants to help them achieve their aggressive design targets and deliver a successful tape-out.
