NPL SSTC lead-free meeting previews unique video of tin transformation

The National Physical Laboratory proudly showed, for the first time publicly, a time-lapse film taken over a 24-hour period, showing the complete disintegration of pure tin. The Tin Pest video is a world first and is likely to be requested by other technical organisations. NPL is currently looking to see how best to provide access for its showing.

This Soldering Science & Technology Club meeting was well attended to hear the presentations by the NPL team, comprising Milos Dusek, Davide Di Maio, Ling Zou and Martin Wickham.

Dr Chris Hunt, Chairman for the day, also introduced Paul Cooper from Radstone Digital Processing who presented “Thermal Management Technology Developments in the USA” a report on a UK DTI Mission to assess the use of modelling with both passive and active cooling scenarios, assess market uptake and identify potential collaboration partners.

The final joint presentation of the day was by Bob Willis and Chris Hunt outlining plans for the “NPL Industry Defect Database” (Figure 2).

All presentations are available on the NPL web site: www.npl.co.uk/ei/
