Saft, the world's leading manufacturer of high-end batteries for industrial applications, is now able to offer its specialized, super robust LSH 20 HTS lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) cylindrical D-size cells to general customers. The high-drain/high-pulse cells, developed originally to offer the ultimate in vibration, shock and temperature resistance for space probes, have already demonstrated an outstanding track-record, since mid- 2004, with a number of OEMs in demanding oil and gas exploration monitoring applications, such as MWD (measurement while drilling) devices.

The super robust LSH 20 HTS cell is a mechanically upgraded version of Saft's well-established LSH HT cell, already capable of operating over temperatures from -60 to +120°C. This latest version was developed originally for space applications, such as the Lander Philae on the Rosetta ESA probe, to withstand the high levels of shock, vibration and acceleration during launch and stage separation. LSH 20 HTS battery packs are flight equipment that will power Philae during its descent and landing operations at comet 6 7P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko.

High levels of shock, vibration, pressure and extreme temperatures are also typical of the harsh conditions found in oil and gas well drilling and monitoring as exploration projects drill ever deeper to access more reserves. So LSH 20 HTS cells are also finding applications in many types of down hole monitoring and measurement such as MWD (measurement while drilling) and LWD (logging while drilling). They are also ideal for military applications with high vibration levels such as ejector seat beacons.

High drain/high pulse capability

The LSH 20 HTS cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6 V and a 12.0 Ah capacity (at 50 mA, +70°C and 2.0 V cut off). It can provide short-term pulse currents up to 4,000 mA and a maximum continuous current of 1,000 mA. It has a low self-discharge of less than 3 percent a year, when stored at +20°C.

Wide temperature range

The LSH 20 HTS cell can operate from -60 to +120°C, and withstand 48- hour excursions up to +125°C.

Shock and vibration resistance

The LSH 20 HTS can withstand axial vibration of 20Grms (2-100Hz), radial vibration of 30Grms (2-100Hz), 30G peak (30 to 2,000Hz) and random 20Grms (30 to 1,000Hz).

Cell construction. The LSH 20 HTS cells are manufactured in France. They feature a power-optimised spiral electrode construction, with a non- flammable electrolyte, contained within an hermetically sealed stainless- steel container with built-in safety vent.

Battery packs

Saft recommends that the LSH 20 HTS should be purchased as part of a pre- assembled, custom built battery pack. As assembly under controlled factory conditions will assure that the exceptional vibration and shock performance is sustained at both the individual cell and pack levels.
