Low index, optically clear potting gel – protects photonics and fibre optics modules

Lightspane™ LS-3238 optical gel is a soft encapsulation material designed especially to protect sensitive photonics and fibre optics modules from mechanical or thermal shock, dust and moisture. The product has a refractive index of 1.38 for aiding total internal reflection in silica fibre, and optical glass and plastic substrates.

LS-3238 is optically clear, permitting post-cure inspection of delicate assemblies. Its ultra-low gel modulus allows large strain without allowing excessive stress build-up in sensitive fibre or wire bond runs.

Delivered in convenient self-mixing/ dispensing cartridges, LS-3238 features a long pot life (8 h) for optimum convenience in an assembly environment. It cures in 24 h at room temperature without the need for UV exposure or high temperature bake. Service temperatures are -40 to +200°C (+260°C for 1-2 min for soldering operations). From stock 50 cc cartridges are available for prototyping and testing.

A four-page technical data sheet describing material properties including optical transmission and refractive index vs wavelength, and tips on substrate preparation and cure schedules, is available from UK distributor Intertronics.
