EPCOS CeraDiodes combine ESO protection with filtering
Keywords: Semiconductors, Ceramic
For the optimum ESD protection of consumer electronics products and computer equipment, EPCOS offers a new series of ceramic semiconductors: the CeraDiode@ line (Plate 2). Progressive miniaturisation and increasing functionality are making modern consumer electronics products and computer equipments not only more compact and complex but also more vulnerable to voltage fluctuations. The high number of inputs and outputs increases the probability of failure caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), thus increasing the need for greater protection.

EPCOS has launched the CeraDiode® line for the optimum ESD
protection of consumer electronics products and computer equipment
CeraDiodes@ are designed to protect data, audio and video lines as well as the inputs and outputs of computers, printers, set-top boxes, TV and video equipment, notebooks, DVD players, hard disks, LCD monitors, car radios and MP3 players. They occupy only a third of the space required by TVS diodes, have shorter response times and can handle higher peak currents. They are also lower in price.
For audio and video applications in particular, they have been developed with defined capacitances. Some CeraDiodes@ thus act as filters as well, so that separate RC networks can be dispensed with. For high-speed data lines, variants with extremely low capacitance have been developed which do not impair signal strength at high bit rates.
