The designer and manufacturer of the Hitachi High-Technologies fingerprint sensor module has won first place in the third international Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC 2004). Hitachi markets the Suprema range of fingerprint solutions, including the new Unifinger SFM1000-PR and SFM2000-PR fingerprint modules that are ideal for embedded system applications where biometric security is needed.

The competition is the world's largest evaluation of fingerprint matching technologies, 110 participants registered and 68 entrants finally submitted algorithms. Four different fingerprint databases with 3,200 fingerprint images were used in the performance evaluation. The Suprema algorithm came first showing the lowest error rate in the light category. The light category was aimed at algorithms conceived for light architectures used in commercial products, ideal for Suprema's algorithm as it is optimised for low cost embedded solutions.
