Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe has announced the MB15F7 × UV series, a new family of sub- miniature dual PLL frequency synthesisers designed for the high frequency mobile communications market (Plate 2).

In response to the continuous market demand for miniaturisation, the design of this latest generation of Fujitsu PLLs enables the devices to be housed in the industry's smallest PLL enclosure, the brand new 18-pad Bump Chip Carrier^™ (BCC) package measuring just 2.4 × 2.7 × 0.45 mm. This package allows the devices to be mounted in an area almost half that of the smallest PLLs currently on the market with a package height of 40 per cent less than conventional PLLs.

Fabricated in Fujitsu's latest 0.35I.Jm BiCMOS technology and capable of operating from 2.4 to 3.6 V low voltage supplies, the MB 15F7 × UV family offers an extremely low current consumption and high operating frequency. Typical consumption is 6.2 mA operating at a RF frequency of 6 GHz with a 3 V supply voltage.

Designed with only two power supply pins (VccRF and VccIF) compared with four in previous generation devices, the new PLLs allow a reduction in the number of external components, such as blocking capacitors, to be achieved.

All members of Fujitsu's MB15F7 × UV family feature low phase noise, fast lockup, selectable charge pump output current and a high sensitivity prescaler input level of −15 dBm with 50 Ώ termination.

Capable of operating at frequencies ranging from 50 MHz to 6 GHz, this new family of PLLs is ideally suited for use in a wide variety of mobile communication applications from wireless LAN (WLAN), mobile and cordless phones to broadband wireless access and Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) environments.
