Super low delay operation demonstrated on MPEG-2 encoder and decoder modules

Utilising the proven SuperENC technology from NTT Electronics, Hitachi High-Technologies can offer an MPEG-2 encoder/decoder module solution that allows easy design of compact, high-quality, super low delay MPEG-2 systems. These latest SDTV 420 and 422 modules have been optimised to offer 84 ms (PAL), 70 ms (NTSC) end-to-end delay for no extra cost.
The super low delay is implemented through parameter setting on the SC2010E/SC2000D modules using finely tuned system timer clock and video buffer settings. In super low delay mode, intra-slice encoding is used with the I and P-frame pictures. This gives a stable 2:1 frame end-to-end delay (encode-decode) achieving 84 ms PAL and 70 ms NTSC.
The modules demonstrate true MPEG2 conformancy to ISO/IEC 13818-2 with transport stream ITS) output up to 60 Mbps. For added versatility, the SC2010E/SC2000D modules can be supplied with two stereo channels for audio.
Each module measures only 90 × 55 mm, with low power consumption (under 5 W per pair) and low latency make them ideal for a wide range of uses including remote broadcast, electronic news gathering, wireless camera and many security and surveillance applications.
The simple plug in and play modules for encoding and decoding can easily be configured to individual needs meaning engineers can focus on defining and designing the requirements of their final encoding systems safe in the knowledge that the complex task of MPEG2 encoding is already completed.
