which appeared in Microelectronics International, Vol. 19 No. 1, 2002

Yulan Zheng received her Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tsinghua, China in 1999 and has been studying for her PhD at the University of Southampton, Thick Film Unit since then. Yulan is currently working as a project engineer at PBT Ltd based at Harlow. Her research interests include mechanical thick film sensors and piezo actuators.

John Atkinson began his career as a merchant navy radio officer in 1972. After working in the offshore oil exploration industry, he obtained his BSc in Computer Engineering at the University of Essex in 1981 and his PhD at the University of Southampton in 1998. He is currently a senior lecturer in the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Southampton and head of the University's Thick Film Unit. His research interests include thick-film technology, electronic instrumentation and sensors. He is also the editor of Microelectronics International.

Zhige (Gary) Zhang received his MSc in 1982 and his MSc in 1986 from the University of Science and Technology of China. Following his MSc, he was a lecturer in the Mechanics Department of USTC for 6 years, during that period he developed his interest in instrumentation and digital signal processing. He was awarded his PhD from the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick in 1996. Gary is now employed as a senior research fellow in the Thick Film Unit of the University of Southampton.

Russell Sion was awarded his BEng in Electronic Systems and Control Engineering by Sheffield Hallam University in 1990. He then continued his studies in the Thick Film Unit of the University of Southampton and was awarded his PhD in 1993. After a period as a senior lecturer in the Systems Engineering Faculty of Southampton Institute, where he is still a visiting lecturer, he became a founding partner in C-Cubed Limited and is the managing director.
