The new Agilent Technologies Laboratory, which has facilities for measurements up to 140 GHz, includes a 110 GHz single sweep vector network analyser, a 8510C vector network analyser, a 50 GHz portable spectrum analyser and a modular DC Source, Semiconductor Parametric Analyser.

During the opening day a number of research projects were demonstrated by students in the Electromagnetics Centre. One of the key demos showed PHEMT RF on-wafer probing to 40 GHz. These devices are used in applications such as next generation mobile communications. The on-wafer probing allows devices to be characterised up to 110 GHz over a temperature range from −65°C to +200°C. The results of the characterisation can provide design parameters for use in Agilent Advanced Design System (ADS) software.

The new research centre will lead to new breakthroughs in areas such as mobile communications, radar systems and sensors.
