High penetration and advancing technology in wireless industry necessitate outsourcing

According to Technology Forecasters Inc.'s (TFI) Industry Consultant Ginny Snyder, "Countries including Japan, Finland, and Sweden are looking at 100 percent penetration in cell phone ownership. Given this high penetration rate and advancing technology, outsourcing is a necessity." Currently, major wireless companies are increasing the divestitures of manufacturing facilities to electronic manufacturing services (EMS) companies.

According to Snyder, "We are between second and third generation, but already the thinking in Japan is fourth generation cellular technology, and additional data speeds set for 2010. TFI is the first to study how outsourcing is fuelling the fast-growing cellular communications market's ability to serve customers with the quantities, technologies, locations and cost-effectiveness needed."

In TFI's report, Wireless Communications: Winning Strategies for Outsourcing, top-tier companies in the industry including Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, Lucent, Nortel and Siemens have been interviewed to gather industry market data and strategies for outsourcing. Topics discussed in the report include the outsourcing of wireless products and how it will change by 2005, the impact of outsourcing on global competition, and the effect facility acquisitions have had on the name-bid suppliers and their contractors.

This report gives managers in EMS, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) supplier and investment companies a jump on current and future opportunities within the industry. According to Snyder, "The best opportunity for small and medium-sized contract manufacturers is up-front design and back-end testing, where OEMs see a lack of EMS capability services."
