ERA Technology Ltd is launching Micro-Screen, a high performance, low-cost and flexible technique for high-density thick film circuits. By using the µ-Screen it is possible to print high definition tracks and spaces of just 50µm (compared to the 200µm limitations found with traditional screens) reducing circuit size and multi-layering without recourse to more expensive photoimageable and thin film techniques.

From the initial concept ERA Technology has led a multi-million Euro development to bring µ-Screen to the marketplace. In response to industry demands, the aim was to produce a new, low cost technique for the production of high-density thick film circuits using conventional screen printing equipment. The use of µ-Screen does not require any further investment and is suitable for regular printing machines employing a standard screen frame for normal off-contact mode printing.

µ-Screen facilitates reduced circuit dimensions and the use of new high-density interconnect components. The results are very impressive with improved edge definition and the ability to produce radial and circular tracks without the random edge effects that are frequently a problem with wire mesh screens. The unique construction of the µ-Screen also makes it suitable for circuits requiring wider lines.

Typical applications include microelectronic and microwave design where edge definition is critical and sensor production where repeatable deposition is required to ensure sensitivity and batch consistency. µ-Screen is also particularly useful where circuit area and I/O pitches are critical and reduces the need for costly multi-layering.

Production of Micro-Screens is simple with customers supplying ERA with the design file preferably in DXF format. ERA produces a modified file to etch the pattern into the foil before a gasketing layer is applied. The foil is then mounted into a standard frame and shipped to the customer. ERA offers support of this product in terms of on-site training, consultancy and applications development.
