Silicon Valley Group has announced the appointment of Dr Michael J. Attardo, former general manager of IBM's Microelectronics Division, to its board of directors.

Under the leadership of Attardo, who held the position since 1992, IBM Microelectronics has been transformed from a captive component supplier to IBM to one of the world's leading high technology chip manufacturers, competing very successfully in the global merchant market.

"SVG's multi-product company strategy will benefit greatly from Dr Attardo's experience at a great and legendary company like IBM" said SVG's chairman and CEO Papken Der Torossian. "He was a founder and one of the leaders at SEMATECH as it worked to achieve leadership. for the US semiconductor industry. His participation in the joint industry-government Semiconductor Technology Council for the United States Department of Defense is another facet of his strong belief in the importance of a vital semiconductor industry. The board of directors and I are very pleased to have an opportunity to work with Dr Attardo, who, in his position with IBM, helped shepherd the development of Micrascan technology a technology started at Perkin Elmer and ultimately acquired by SVG."

Attardo has been a member of the board of directors of both the Semiconductor Industry Association and the Engineering Council of the Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science. In 1998 he was a recipient of Columbia's Egleston Medal for engineering excellence. Attardo holds a bachelor's degree in the arts from Queens College and bachelor of science, master of science and doctorate degrees in metallurgy from Columbia University.
