In less than one year from its initial funding, CS2, Europe's latest area array packaging and assembly operation, has started production builds following the recent qualification of its first products.

At the same time, the company has announced the expansion of its clean room to 1,600 square meters, which will more than double CS2's current annual capacity to 55 million units by year-end.

In line with its stated objective of providing high-end, fast cycle-time packaging, CS2's automated flip chip line is currently qualifying for 6 × 6mm FC-CSPs (for chips of 5 × 5mm); 1l × l1mm FC-CSPs; 11 × 11mm FC-L(F) BGAs and 17 × 17mm FC-L(F)BGAs, as well as a 35 × 35 FC Multi-chip module.

In addition to flip chip, CS2 has purchased its first mixed signal tester, a Credence Duo, with a 320-pin test head.

"Our strategy of operating close to manufacturers and their markets and providing a flexible, well engineered solution is paying off", says Steve Lerner, CEO of CS2. "We are winning business in the European subcontract area array market and are on track to become a major player in the international market."

From its inception last May, CS2 today employs over 70 people, more than 20 per cent of whom are engineering and development staff.
