First International Conference on Environmental Challenges in Arid Regions Jeddah, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 6-8 February 2012

The Center of Excellence in Environmental Studies at King Abdul-Aziz University through the support of the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia, is organising its First International Conference on Environmental Challenges in Arid Regions to debate scientific and practical research advancements on the topics of the conference, and to provide a platform for interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and dissemination of success stories.

The different conference sessions will focus on priority environmental issues of air pollution, water pollution and solid waste management of concern to the well-being of the arid regions communities addressed and discussed by imminent keynote speakers, researchers and environment professionals. It is hoped that this gathering will provide opportunities to discuss collaborative research and capacity building activities between the Center and environment researchers and other research centres at different parts of the world interested in the environmental management of arid regions. International Conference on Technology Transfer and Renewable Energy (ICTTRE) 2012 Mauritius, 21-22 June 2012

The project “Small Developing Island Renewable Energy Knowledge and Technology Transfer Network” (DIREKT) is a cooperation scheme involving universities from Germany, Fiji, Mauritius, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago with the aim of strengthening the science and technology capacity in the field of renewable energy of a sample of Africa, Caribbean, Pacific (ACP) small island developing states, by means of technology transfer, information exchange and networking. Developing countries are especially vulnerable to problems associated with climate change and much can be gained by raising their capacity in the field of renewable energy, which is a key area.

In the context of the project DIREKT, the ICTTRE 2012 is being organised, being hosted by the University of Mauritius. This conference aims to:

  1. 1.

    to provide universities of ACP countries and other areas with an opportunity to display and present their research activities and work on renewable energy;

  2. 2.

    to promote the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of projects and technology transfer activities on renewable energy; and

  3. 3.

    to discuss methodological approaches and projects which aim at integrating the topic of sustainable and renewable energy in support of national projects and in the implementation of renewable energy action plans.

Furthermore, the event will provide a unique opportunity for publishing the work of the participants in refereed journals, since provisions for this will be made. Human experience in the natural and built environment: implications for research, policy and practice Glasgow, Scotland, 24-29 June 2012

Contributions are invited for this 22nd International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS) Conference, which will take place at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow from 24-29 June 2012. The conference, which is jointly organised by the University of Strathclyde, the University of Sheffield and the University of West of Scotland, will explore human behaviour and experience in both the built and natural environments and will focus on the relationship between research, practice and policy and how this can significantly impact on socially and environmentally sustainable development.

Contributions are invited in relation to the three overarching conference themes:

    geography and urban context – urbanisation and planning in developed and developing countries;

  2. 2.

    planning, design and evaluation in human environments; and

  3. 3.
