DEFRA advocates waste wood as the “untapped resource for biomass fuel”

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 19, Issue 5

The UK Agency DEFRA published a market information report called “Waste Wood as a Biomass Fuel”, which draws on a range of published material and activity surveys of producers, aggregators and users of waste wood, in order to provide an overview of the current shape of the waste wood market and predict future market trends.

The report emphasizes the significant carbon and energy benefits of recovering energy from waste wood, which is currently a largely untapped biomass resource readily available in municipal, construction, demolition, commercial and industrial waste streams. This coincides with the dedication of a £4 million fund to support the installation of biomass-fuelled heating and combined heat and power projects by industrial, commercial and community sectors.
