Half of European energy “could be renewable”

The EU could get half of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, compared with 6 percent today, according to Greenpeace. In a report recently launched in the European Parliament, the NGO said that through greater energy efficiency Europe could cut its total energy demand from 72,000 petajoules per year in 2003 to 46,000 petajoules by 2050. There would be intensive use of large hydropower and increased deployment of renewable combined heat and power generation.
