Healthcare and information: an international perspective

Clinical Governance: An International Journal aims to address the doubts, queries, triumphs and practical applications of introducing quality assurance mechanisms into the delivery of care. The journal takes an international stance and covers key developments worldwide which can inform best practice in health care. Efficiency, effectiveness and equity are the main factors in the economic assessment of best practice but quality has other dimensions and all of these are addressed in the research, audit and evidence-based papers published. All papers are peer reviewed to ensure their validity and value to current debates.

Clinical Governance: An International Journal plans to produce a special issue devoted to health informatics initiatives in several countries.

Individuals interested in presenting an article should submit an abstract of no more than 500 words outlining the nature of the information initiative they wish to describe, the aspects of clinical governance they will address and the areas of academic interest they illuminate. Authors will be advised whether to pursue the development of the full article, based on the submitted abstract. Subsequently, the Editors, in collaboration with the journal's peer review process, will review the submitted articles and make a final decision regarding inclusion in the special issue.

Coverage

To meet the criteria for selection of articles, authors should describe health information and informatics development initiatives that:

.focus on the level of a health system, an institution or clinic,a department or practice or a health-educational initiative ;

.aim at building an appreciation of the social and ethical as well as the technical aspects of health-, healthcare- or healthcare education- information systems, with a focus on any or all of the following : their strategic purpose, design and development, implementation or evaluation.

Especially, but not exclusively, we are interested in articles that link the strategic motivation to provide information systems with the measures taken to ensure that they are useful to, and usable by, the front-line staff who deliver the clinical service.

Papers should:

.aim to transcend parochial concerns and present any local issues in ways that illustrate relevant general concerns;

.be guided by an overall evidence-based conceptual framework drawn from relevant literature and experience; and

.describe the level of co-ordination between the provision of the relevant information initiative and the development of the broader change initiatives it is intended to support.

Papers submitted for this issue, suitable for publication but not accommodated within the special issue will be considered for publication in a future issue of the journal.
