NHS Medical Director Bruce Keogh hosted the inaugural Medical Directors’ Conference in London at the end of 2008. More than 300 delegates attended the two-day event, which included panel discussions on revalidation and workforce issues and practical workshops on implementing the commitments in High Quality Care for All.

Lord Darzi and David Nicholson gave presentations on future priorities for the NHS and in summing up, Sir Bruce told medical directors that their leadership is crucial to raising standards and embedding quality as the organising principle of the NHS. On each day, delegates worked with officials from DH to input ideas into the development of policy around quality including measuring for quality improvement, quality accounts, patient safety, expanding NICE and handling complaints.

Closing the conference, Sir Bruce thanked delegates for their time and input and invited them back to the second MDs’ conference in November 2009.
