This column brings to the attention of consortium managers Web sites that should be of particular interest.

Jakehttp://jake.med.yale.edu/ Jointly Administered Knowledge Environment (jake) is a database application that "supports the management of and linking between online resources and descriptions thereof." It is not intended to redistribute actual content, but rather to facilitate access to and integration among the content of many electronic resources. It currently includes information about 162 databases. According to the jake documentation, several pieces of functionality are already in place. These include:

  • Finding where certain journals are indexed.

  • Finding where certain journals have full-text.

  • Expanding journal abbreviations.

  • Linking from search results to catalogs.

  • Linking directly to issue lists and articles.

In the future, more is planned:

  • Linking from search results to search interfaces or databases.

  • Linking from one arbitrary resource to another (e.g. a citation in one database to the article in another).

  • Easy lookup of local information about jake-related holdings.

  • Linking from administrative metadata management tools.

  • Coverage comparison between resources.

In December 1999, jake was getting 400-500 hits per day and by the first week in February 2000, was up to 2,000 hits per day as news of the application spreads.
