After Dearing

Heather Watkins

Career development in its many forms has been the order of the day over the last few months, with exhaustive coverage in many of the main UK forums (or is it fora?) for discussion. I can only try to summarise some of the major issues in this column, starting with ...

After Dearing

For those of us in the Higher Education sector, the aftermath of the Dearing Report is the issue of the day. The Library Association are offering a seminar on 29 January 1998, at LA Headquarters in London, on Supporting wider access after Dearing. Beryl Morris will lead this one day seminar which will examine "practical ways to develop and deliver responsive learning support services to diverse groups of students'.

Speakers will include Philippa Dolphin of Birkbeck College and Dr Alan MacDougall of Dublin City University. For further details, contact the LA's Professional Development division on 0171 636 7543 ext 287/8 or e-mail events@la-hq.org.uk

Thames Valley University have recently announced a new and very topical MA/MSc programme in Learning Strategies, to start in February 1998. The course is aimed at any "learning facilitator' who is looking for guidance on how to implement creative and effective student learning programmes. The programme is being delivered in various highly flexible ways, ranging from one day a week to "flexi-distance" learning. Further information is available from Ann Luzeckyj at Thames Valley, e-mail Ann.Luzeckyj@tvu.ac.uk
