My gift to Kybernetes on the occasion of its 40th anniversary is an edited extract from my unpublished PhD thesis: “Cognitive representations, and their transformations in the acquisition of keyboard skills”, Brunel University, 1976. The essay shows how cybernetics had a profound influence on my understanding of psychology (published in this issue – see “Toward a cybernetic psychology”).
