Preface

When Dr Dash Wu of the RiskLab of the University of Toronto, Canada, and of Reykjavik University, Iceland, suggested that this journal should publish a special issue on the new and emerging area of risk management we were sceptical, asking was it suitable and within the scope of cybernetics, systems and management science. This, however, was only because of our own misunderstanding of the “service science” and its importance at the present time. Readers of Kybernetes who also have such misgivings will, after studying Dr Wu’s introduction to this special issue on risk management and the papers selected to illustrate it, appreciate its value and relevance to present-day global endeavours.

In consequence, we are grateful to our guest editor for making the case for featuring this field of research and development. We would also wish to thank all who have assisted in its compilation and, in particular, the invited contributors whose papers have been peer-reviewed in the usual way.

In addition to the special themed contributions, we have also included some of our regular features.
