This conference will take place on November 6, 2009 at the Royal Statistical Society, London, UK.

Call for papers

The conference will be dedicated to tracing the history of social, professional, and academic networks, which in some way influenced the creation of new mathematical concepts or disciplines. East London, where the conference will be held, was the fermenting ground where one of the first mathematical societies was founded, the Spitalfield Mathematical Society (1717). The history of the area can inspire, in many ways, the potential contributions to the conference, and we are seeking proposals which would in some way exploit this potential.

Contributions based on the following are of particular interest: describing and exploring the history of mathematics that came from, or was beneficial to the many social and cultural groups; the way in which these groups were interested in or contributed to applied mathematics, and were loosely linked to navigation, surveying, engineering and instrument making.

Links with the artisan or particular ethnic and/or cultural groups resident in London (such as Huguenots – weavers of Spitalfields, etc.) can also offer a wealth of possible contexts in which to explore the history of mathematics.
