This is a book published in the Chapman and Hall/CRC Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computation Series.

The authors are from the University of Franche‐Comte in Belfort, France.

This book explores the theoretical and practical aspects of parallel numerical algorithms and has six chapters together with an appendix, reference list and an index. Each chapter has a theoretical discussion of the topic being presented as well as an algorithm section, and an evaluation of the advantages and drawbacks of the algorithms. The chapter headings are:

  • Introduction to iterative algorithms.

  • Iterative algorithms and applications to numerical problems.

  • Parallel architectures and iterative algorithms.

  • Synchronous iterations.

  • Asynchronous iterations.

  • Programming environments and experimental results.

Finally, an Appendix entitled: “Diagonal dominance and irreducible matrices” is included.

The aim of the book is to provide the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to design and implement efficient parallel iterative algorithms. The applications of these algorithms to solve both linear and non‐linear problems in the parallel environment should provide valuable insights into a topic which is of much interest to cyberneticians and systemists.
