First Conference on Models and Mathematical Methods and their Applications to Biology and Industry

First Conference on Models and Mathematical Methods and their Applications to Biology and Industry

Le Roche-sur-Yon, France – 6-7 December 2007

This conference was the first to be held that was concerned with the area of mathematics that is applied to biology and industry. It aimed at bringing together specialists of mathematical modelling. These included those who work in the fields of applied mathematics, informatics, biology, the food industry and many allied subjects.

Many of the contributors to the conference have published in Kybernetes, which through the enthusiasm of Professor Cherruault (Chair of Conference Scientific Committee) has taken a lead in this research and development.

Objectives of the conference

The aim of this conference was to:

... present efficient mathematical and numerical methods for solving problems arising from biology and food industry and more generally from industrial field. More precisely it was concerned with modelling, identification, optimization, optimal control of processes, algorithms for solving functional equations and related topics (inverse problems, ...). It also made fruitful contacts between applied and pure mathematicians and specialists of life sciences. The aims: bringing the tools for modelling and for solving the associated mathematical problems, the second; setting concrete problems and giving experimental data.

Topics considered at the conference

Compartmental models and their applications. Global optimization in the life sciences. Decompositional methods applied to biological systems. Optimal control of biological systems. Theory and applications. Mixing decompositional and global optimization methods for solving identification and optical control problem. Mathematical modelling in immunology. Application to concrete problems (AIDS, cancer ...). Modelling in pharmacokinetics et en pharmacodynamics. Determination of optimal therapeutics from models. Mathematical models in cardiology. Mathematical modelling in molecular biology. Global optimization for functional with large number of variables. Neural networks and applications to medical imaging. Optimization in mixed or integer variables and applications to industrial problems.
