Published in the series “Information Science and Statistics” the book is written by Dr Milan Studeny of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague.
It provides the mathematical description of probabilistic conditional independence structures. The author takes an algebric approach and uses non-graphical methods for their description. The contents include:
Introduction – Basic Concepts – Graphical Methods – Structural Imsets: Fundamentals – Description of Probabilistic Models – Equivalence and Implication – The Problem of Representative Choice – Learning – Open Problems – Appendix – References – Index.
This monograph aims to present methods of structural imsets and supermodel functions and considers the independence implication and equivalence of structural imsets. Dr Studeny also looks at motivation, mathematical foundations and areas of application. A rough guide to graphical methods, however, is also presented. The book has been prepared so that it will be understood by statisticians but also by researchers, particularly, it is suggested, by those involved in Artificial Intelligence. The Appendix, listed with the contents contains, the author says, all the necessary elementary mathematical notions that may be required or recalled.
