Michael C. Jackson is Director of the University of Hull Business School, in the UK and is well-known in the systems community. Some ten years ago he published: Systems Methodology for the Management Sciences. In his preface to this new book he writes that: In this new, version I have tried to maintain and enhance what I believe are seen as the merits of the original book ... . The aims of the new book remain, ... to provide theoretical and methodological coherence to systems thinking, and to do so in a manner which enhances the practical relevance of the ideas.

The new text covers chaos and complexity theory, the learning organization, system dynamics, living systems theory, soft systems methodology, interactive planning, interactive management, total systems intervention, autopoiesis, management cybernetics, the viable system model, operations research, (Hard and soft), systems analysis, systems engineering, general system theory, sociotechnical systems thinking, the fifth discipline, social systems design, team syntegrity, post-modern systems thinking, critical systems thinking, and, we are told, much more.
