Bertalanffy Anniversary Conference 2001

The Bertalanffy Anniversary Conference for 2001 was titled "Unity Through Diversity" and scheduled for 1-4 November.

The motto of the conference: "Unity Through Diversity", is said to determine not only the substance of the conference but also its form.

A great variety of events differing in nature and in mode of presentation were offered a platform for discussions about specific subjects related to:

  • Bertalanffy's work in the historical context;

  • Bertalanffy's Concept of "General Systems Weltanschauung";

  • Systems Thinking Today.

The planned symposia discussed over the Internet site topics that (http://www.bertalanffy.org/disus) included:

  • e Symposium (I). "The creation of a sustainable society depends on Innovative Systems Thinking (IST)" supported by General Systems Weltanschauung (GSW) aims at exploring how it might be feasible to reach Sustainable Development as a steady state or flow equilibrium of humankind's dynamics (Co-ordinated by John Raven and Elohim, J.).

  • The Symposium (II). "Wholism (or Holism) The way forward into the 21st century" aims at knowing how human beings may learn better to develop a new way of thinking for clearly seeing the forest for the trees, a way that has been variously described as Gestalt, global, molar, integrative, organismic, synergistic, … or better as hoiistic or wholistic (Coordinated by Gyorgy Jaros and Elohim, J.).

  • The Symposium (III). "General Systems Theory as a Methodological Maxim" aims at recognizing "General System Theory (as) an exact doctrine of wholeness as a "pure nature science" or "reine naturwissenschaft", to use Kant's expression – that is, it is a hypothetical-deductive system of those principles which follow from the definition of system and by the introduction of more or less special condition ("Ludwig von Bertalanffy).
