Interdisciplinary initiative

This example of such an interdisciplinary approach to research is based on Dr Wolkenhauer's own development as a scientist. He studied control engineering in Germany and also in the United Kingdom, and developed an interest in using new methodologies for analysing organisationand behaviour of systems through mathematical modelling. The recognition at the university institute UMIST of the importance of such approaches and at the interface of the life sciences, engineering and mathematics led to Dr Wolkenhauer's appointment jointly between the engineering and biomedical sciences departments. He has now had the backing of the UK's research councils to continue this work and, with the financial support that he is receiving, he is setting up a network to investigate the opportunities and challenges for the systems science in genomics. The network is open to all researchers who have an interest in moelecular biology or mathematical modelling and data analysis.

In particular he welcomes enquiries about this endeavour. Information: and details about contacting him are on: www.umist.ac.uk/csc/people/wolkenhauer.htm
