Mathematics and fuzzy logic

Keywords: Publication, Cybernetics, Fuzzy logic

Studies in fuzzy systems are an integral part of modern cybernetics and systems. A recent book, it is claimed, provides us with both an introduction to fuzzy logic as well as being a teaching aid for those involved with university courses in the field. The book is:

Mathematics behind Fuzzy Logic

E. TurunenSeries - Advances in Soft ComputingSpringer-Verlag1999x + 191 pp.ISBN 3-7908-1221-8Softcover - £30, US$44, DM78

The author of this book is from the University of Technology at Lappeenranta, Finland. It tells us that many results in fuzzy logic depend on the mathematical structure the truth value set obeys. By way of introduction, the algebraic foundations of many-valued and fuzzy reasoning are introduced. The author suggests that the book is self-contained and in consequence no previous knowledge in algebra or in logic is required. What will appeal to those concerned with university courses for undergraduates and post graduates is that it contains 134 exercises that are complete with answers. Four chapters: Residual lattices; MV - Algebras; Fuzzy propositional logic; Fuzzy relations, are presented together with the solutions to the exercises.
