There has been a great deal of interest shown in quantum computing and it is not surprising to see the interest in its progress. Readers are intrigued by the subject even if many of the reports on advances are often somewhat dated and aimed at the more popular media elements.

Brian Oakley, who is chairman of the European Commission Pathfinder Project on Quantum Computing, says that:

This book is virtually the only book to deal solely and comprehensively with the subject. It is particularly valuable because the explanations are rooted in the history of computing and secure communications, making it clear why this subject is potentially important.

The authors note that it is for those with a scientific or computing knowledge but, even so, the lay reader will understand much of what is presented. The subject‐matter is dealt with in a readable manner and covers the subject fully with current references.

A CD‐ROM of the simulators and animators for the quantum devices discussed is available.
