Journal of Management Development invites the submission of articles on Turkish management and business practices. Studies on managerial practices in emerging market economies have often used one-sided approaches and static research designs. Given the dynamic nature of the Turkish economy, change is not an option but a required path for transformation and survival. Turbulence and anxieties, sometimes inevitably, distract or at best re-orient the speed of change and transition. Some of these anxieties created internal (political instabilities) while some others are more regional. For instance, the financial crisis of 2001 in Turkey accelerated the speed of change at both private and public sectors but still the level and desire for change has not been researched. Even a rate of economic opportunities and the internationalisation and modernisation of Turkish firms, industries, and institutions, has the heightened attention of policy makers and researchers alike. Now is the time for new ideas and new thinking.

As a close-knit society, business organisations in Turkey are dominated by private holding companies run by family members and professional managers. Large private enterprises, by and large controlled by industrial groups, remain active in many markets, albeit not necessarily under unified entrepreneurial and financial control. Somewhat like the zaibatsu in pre-World War II Japan and some of the larger keiretsu in modern Japan, groups invest in several industries. A further resemblance between Asian industrial groups such as Korean cheabols relations with the state, the Turkish state mechanism, from the early years of the republic, has been a major player in business life and often intervenes by frequent and predictable policy changes. The dynamic changes in the Turkish economy have also brought about questions on internationalisation of Turkish industrial groups, and SMEs. Accession negotiations with the EU also induced some strategic initiatives in the public sector which require a mental shift in terms of managerial ideology of policy makers and managers alike. With such changes, we invite contributors to submit paper on development in Turkey.

Potential papers may include but are not limited to:

  • Managerial ideologies and leadership in industrial groups in Turkey

  • Corporate governance practices and transparency in Turkish firms

  • Modernization of family businesses in Turkey

  • Internationalisation process of Turkish firms

  • Infusion of managerial knowledge through strategic alliances and M&As

  • Changing or unchanging HR practices

  • Public sector anxieties and transformation

  • Strategy development and planning practices in public sector

  • SMEs and management development.

The special issue is open to a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches to address these and other issues, including case studies, grounded theory building, econometric analyses, etc. The deadline for submission of manuscripts is 30 March 2007. Please refer to the Journal Statement, Author Guidelines, and paper review guidelines for additional information on the scope of the Journal, manuscript preparation and paper review process.
