New crisis management programme launched

New crisis management programme launched

The Institute of Directors, in association with OCTO, now offers a new development programme for directors and senior executives which will enable them to identify potential crises before they arise, and be ready to handle them effectively should they occur.

This follows research published by Templeton College Oxford, which found that companies that have coped well with unexpected and damaging events have subsequently recovered with enhanced share ratings, thus creating advantage from adversity. The study of the aftermath of 14 corporate disasters for publicly-owned companies found that shareholder value inevitably drops in the immediate aftermath of an adverse event, but:

  • recovery of shareholder value appears to be related directly to the perceived ability of the management team in dealing with the crisis;

  • companies that prepare for crisis handle it better than those that do not; and

  • insurance will not protect shareholder value.
