Small business DIY manual

How can small business managers juggle the hands-on running of their businesses with finding the time to research the latest thinking and update their skills? With so many books, journals and manuals available it can be difficult to know what is relevant and where to begin.

Small Business Management, from the Institute of Management (IM), is based on the popular Checklist series developed by the IM's Management Information Centre (MIC), in response to the 50,000 calls a year it receives from managers seeking quick-fix information. Often, managers are all asking the same questions and the MIC's checklists cover the most frequent enquiries condensed into practical pointers from the centre's substantial library.

Small Business Management published by Hodder & Stoughton, contains 30 checklists of wide-ranging topics in 150 pages. Subjects include running a business from home, writing a business plan, controlling costs, marketing and using a bank to the best advantage. It also offers the option to explore subjects further through recommended reading. Relevancy is guaranteed as these topics are based on managers' requests, rather than what an author believes is important. Information is presented in an easily accessible format. Each of the 30 checklists are broken down into advantages and disadvantages, an action list and dos and don'ts, so that managers can quickly dip into the text and extract the information they need. The chapters end in a Thoughl Starter asking readers to consider questions and so begin to approach the subject in a relevant and practical way.

There are six other Business Checklist titles including Marketing & Strategy, Personal Effectiveness & Career Development, People Management, Personnel Policies, and Training & Development.

The MIC is the largest management library of its kind in Europe. It is an authoritative source of information covering all areas of management skills and current thinking. IM members have access to over two million articles on the Internet, easily searched, downloaded, e-mailed or printed. For further information about these services, contact the MIC.
