This issue of the Journal of European Real Estate Research (JERER) is pleased to include three of the prize-winning papers from the 17th Annual Conference of the European Real Estate Society (ERES) that was hosted in Milan by SDA Bocconi in June 2010. ERES has been a key driver in promoting real estate research throughout Europe since its establishment in the early 1990s. The role of ERES in hosting its annual conference in different locations throughout Europe has been a major stimulus in raising the profile of research and providing the opportunities for new researchers to present their papers to an international audience. ERES mission is to span both academe and practice and has been highly innovative in introducing industry-based seminars and an annual educational forum.

JERER as the official journal of ERES is an example of this innovation that the society is seeking to promote, entering into an agreement with Emerald to produce a peer reviewed journal that provides the opportunity to further expand the reach of real estate research. The journal now into its fourth edition has served to open up a new market in real estate research throughout the continent of Europe spreading the knowledge base and interacting with researchers operating in markets in different stages of development and transparency in terms of real estate information and output. However, real research is global and although the journal has a European base, as evidence of the international context within which we operate the highest number of downloads for the journal in 2010 was from Malaysia.

ERES is delighted to work with industry and the profession and is extremely grateful to all those organisations that sponsor best paper prizes at the annual conference. Three of the 2010 prize-winning papers are published in this issue of the journal, these are listed below.

The Gerald Brown Memorial Prize for the Best Paper on Real Estate Markets and Forecasting, sponsored by Emerald. The recipient of this prize is Kim Hiang Liow for the paper titled “Time series behaviour of average dynamic conditional correlations in European real estate securities markets: an empirical exploration”.

The RICS Award for the Best Paper on Sustainability authored by Louise Ellison and Patrick Brown for their paper on “Sustainability metrics for commercial real estate assets – establishing a common approach”.

The ANEVAR Award for Best Paper in Development was awarded to Brano Glumac with Qi Han, Jos Smeets and Wim Schaefer for their paper on “Brownfield redevelopment features: applying Fuzzy Delphi”.

ERES would wish to congratulate the authors of these prize-winning papers and encourage participants at the 2011 ERES Conference in Eindhoven to submit papers for these prestigious prizes that reflect different themes within the real estate discipline. Once again on behalf of ERES, I would like thank the generosity of the sponsors of the prize-winning papers for their continuing support.
