ABB I-R Waterjet Systems AB, the world’s leading manufacturer of robotised waterjet cutting systems, presented new milling systems for the first time alongside the company’s waterjet cutting products at Euromold 2002. The addition of milling systems offers new solutions for manufacturers of many automotive components, such as instrument panels and door panels as well as some composite parts, that can be cut with either waterjet or milling techniques (Plate 4).

With over 400 systems from ABB I-R alone, installed worldwide, the market for robotised pure waterjet cutting systems continues to expand, based on its very successful use in the automotive manufacturing industry, where systems of this type are used in trim applications on interior components of vehicles made from soft materials such as polyurethane foam, moulded fibres, sandwich materials or composites.

Plate 4 At EuroMold 2002, ABB I-R Waterjet Systems AB, as leading manufacturer or robotised waterjet cutting systems, will be presenting new milling systems for the first time alongside the company’s waterjet cutting products

With the addition of milling systems, ABB I-R can offer customers the most suitable cutting solution for their parts with regard to system design, comfort of utilisation and, of course, productivity and cost-efficiency. ABB I-R’s evaluation begins in the very early stages of automotive projects, to ensure that the most optimum trimming solution is delivered well in time for pre-production and production needs.

The new milling systems from ABB I-R are well proven, with many similar systems already in use for manufacturing interior and exterior trim components for major car makers such as Audi, BMW and Daimler Chrysler.

Based on the company’s very successful Cutting Box platform, ABB I-R designs and manufactures a family of robotised waterjet cutting systems in a range of variants depending on the size of the component to be cut. Many companies around the world are now aware of the advantages offered by flexible waterjet cutting and milling compared to other methods such as punch tools, ultrasonics and thermal techniques such as laser and plasma arc cutting.
