Seiko Instruments Co. Ltd, USA, reports for its Japanese parent the introduction of a new, higher speed version of the EL650 tabletop robot. This unit operating with the new Seiko RCS PC-based controller is designed "in the company's tradition of building high-speed, high-precision, easy-to-use assembly robots". It has set the speed benchmark by taking only 390 milli-seconds to complete a 1 x 12 x 1in. cycle, a record established carrying a 2kg payload.
The EL650 has a maximum payload of 5kgs and a reach of 650mm. The controller combines robot and vision-programming software with the power of the industrial PC. The PC's open architecture means that customers and Seiko researchers "can quickly add new features to help solve manufacturing problems".
Force sensing is also now available on robots equipped with the Seiko RCS controller. The Seiko Force Sensing Option integrates the ATI ISA-based six-axis force sensor with Seiko RCS and can detect forces as little as 0.4oz in the Z direction, and 0.2oz in the X-Y direction.
