A new compact series of modular rotary encoder from Heidenhain provides a direct shaft mounting solution for applications such as those being demanded by the electronics manufacturing industry to accommodate higher positioning speeds and improved accuracy (see Plate 7).
Designated ERO and available in the 1200 and 1400 series, the new encoder is for integration into a motor and comprises a disk and adjacent scanning unit that eliminates any effects of friction in the assembly. The new encoder also includes commonly used interfaces for TTL square-wave output signals. If the unit is required to output fine measuring steps, in order to maintain speed control, a high quality 1 Vpp signal amplitude permits higher interpolation.

The ERO 1200 encoder series has a depth of 30mm with an outside diameter of 52min. It is specifically designed to suit motor shafts of 8mm, 10mm and 12mm diameter and ideal for shaft speeds up to 18,000 revs/min. Line counts up to 2,500 are available before internal subdivision. Maximum operating temperature is 100° C.
Meanwhile, the ERO 1400 series is smaller with a compact depth of only 19.3mm and outside diameter 38.4mm. It will cater for shaft speeds up to 20,000 revs/min. and has graduated disks with line counts up to 1,500. Shaft diameters of 4mm, 6mm and 8mm are accommodated and the simple to mount encoder has an integrated feature that centres the circular scale to the scanning unit and automatically adjusts the gap between scanning head and disk. Maximum operating temperature is 70° C.
