ABB Flexible Automation has provided customer training for many years. Now, as part of its continuous training improvement programme, ABB has taken the step of translating these high quality courses into proven, recognised competency qualifications, underwritten by the Engineering and Marine Training Authority (EMTA), one of the top engineering education establishments in the UK.

An additional advantage for customers is that, in many instances, up to 60 per cent of course fees are available from the EU Social Fund and the Department of Trade and Industry.

NVQs are nationally recognised qualifications that require evidence of real-life competence to complete. Gaining an NVQ qualification confirms a student's practical capabilities, unlike many academic qualifications that merely ask the student to passively repeat previously memorised facts. NVQ grades are based on the student's ability to perform.

ABB Flexible Automation aims to provide every student producing adequate evidence to warrant it, with a certificate of competency. The certificate will take the form of a Unit Credit at NVQ level 3 (NVQ3 is approximately equal to two A levels).

ABB's goal is to migrate all of their customer courses to the NVQ programme and progress to date has been swift. In October 1999 the NVQ assessors were qualified, in November ABB Flexible Automation became an EMTA approved centre and in December the first pilot course was run successfully. Planned future developments include NVQ unit accreditation for programming and service courses with the objective of full NVQ unit certification before the end of the year.
