With manufacturers competing to produce increasingly complex robotic systems with more and more computer controlled axes, it is refreshing to learn that Comau has introduced an easy to use, 3/4-axis robot capable of a wide variety of pick and place applications (see Plate 5).
Called SMART $5, it has a load capacity of 10kg and may be floor mounted or inverted. Its configuration is based on a vertical, 800mm column along which a gripper carriage moves at up to 1.25m/s.

Another CNC axis is provided by a rotary base which swings the column through ±152.5 degrees, giving the robot a large working envelope. Speed in this axis is very rapid at ±280 deg/s, considering that the robot's horizontal reach is 800mm.
The third degree of freedom allows the gripper arm to swing ±25 degrees at 480 deg/s. An optional fourth axis allows a four-degree horizontal or vertical tilt of the gripper.
Repeatability of position is ±0.3mm, providing sufficient accuracy for virtually all handling jobs. Control is from the proven Comau C3G Plus controller. Another feature of the robot is its wide operating temperature range, from 0 to 45°C.
The high speed, flexible SMART $5 complements the existing range of Comau robots which includes more than 20 basic models plus customised variations. Comau UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of Comau SpA, Turin, part of the Fiat group. The company offers an extensive programme of automation solutions to industry.
